If you're uploading videos to YouTube and have a low or no budget to edit videos no worries. Use the YouTube Creator Studio (beta) to edit you videos after you upload them. There is also a Creator Insider Channel here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGg-UqjRgzhYDPJMr-9HXCg. There is also a Creators Blog here https://youtube-creators.googleblog.com/

In the Perl world there is a saying; "There's more than one way to do it." Well, I find it interesting that there are developers out there that are stick paying massive amounts of money for tools when it no necessary. Instead of maying an annual software maintenance fee for Adobe products to edit videos you can edit them in YouTube Creator Studio.
I maintain a website for our church https://cbcwoodbridge.org. We migrating from a html template to using Drupal CMS. We were getting a lot of spam email from out contact form. I have the Honeypot (free) module installed but it just wasn't enough. Then I found the Cleantalk in the modules section of drupal.org. I installed it and was instantly surprised that within 3 days it was stopping bots from using our contact form from sending spam. It's definitely worth the annual fee for this module. I highly recommend it. Here's the link to module on the drupal site. https://www.drupal.org/project/cleantalk

Seasons Greetings!

Merry Christmas, even though it is the day after. Having spent time in Upstate NY as a kid I enjoyed celebrating Christmas with snow on the ground. Sadly living in N. VA we don't usually get much if any snow at this time of year. I miss snow and when we do get it I usually will go out and spend 4 - 5 hrs snow-blowing the sidewalks in our townhouse community.

Now to the point of this update. I bought a Google ChromeCast device quite a while back. I posted a review about it shortly after testing it out and I was sadly disappointed that there weren't that many apps available for it yet. I was also disappointed that you could only display a few apps to the screen from whatever phone or tablet you were using. At the time I had my Wife's Samsung Tab 2 10.1" tablet and my Motorola Droid X2 (mobile computing device that thinks it's a phone).

Anyway, I had to replace my 4.5 yr old X2 with a new Samsung Galaxy S5. The phone dialer was taking 3 minutes to dial someone. The review for my new phone will be the subject for a separated blog post.

So I started tinkering the new S5 and some of it's more advanced features. I decided to see what it could do with my ChromeCast device. There is a Samsung patch for the ChromeCast app so I installed it on my S5. Google updated ChromeCast to now allow full device mirroring to the ChromeCast device. Awesome, FINALLY!

This works great from my S5. My Wife's family recently purchased 3 Galaxy S5 mobile computing devices. With the ChromeCast device I can now go over and demonstrate to them the different features available on the S5 while my screen is mirrored on the TV screen. WooHoo! Gotta love technology sometimes.

You can get all the latest news and updates related to ChromeCast at this URL http://googlechromecast.com/

Happy New Year! Stay safe in the cyber world too!

It's been quite some time since I last posted anything here. I need to start writing more but there never seems to be enough time for the fun stuff including getting in a nap. There are way too many distractions it seems like.

By trade I've a hardware person, well, for the last 34 yrs.. I must admit however that electronics or computer hardware has become hard to follow in the last 10 to 15 years. The reason is because hardware it changing so rapidly anymore and I believe we can throw out Moore's Law. I don't usually look at hardware that closely anymore unless I need to replace a computer at work or home. At work servers are being virtualized so there's really no need for me to keep up with that much lately. I'm not going to go into how computer virtualization works here though for those that aren't familiar with technology.

Anyway, this is going to be a review about the Chromecast device I received as a Christmas gift. Yes, I'm a gadget person however not as bad as some people. I don't run out buy a gadget immediately after it hits the "shelf". I prefer to wait until a product has matured a little, say when it's reach the 3rd or 4th generation. I also try to determine whether a product is going to be worth the investment of my time as well as my money. Is it going to be useful too or is it going to "collect dust" after I'm finished tinkering with it and I move to something else or get so distracted that I don't tinker with it for a year.

You can buy the device from Google directly or a 3rd pary such as Radio Shack, Best Buy or MicroCenter now, for $35. It's slightly bigger than a thumbdrive, comes with a power adaptor, USB Cable used to power the device.

At the time that I recieved it there was limited app support. What was more curious Chromecast app wasn't support on my Wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. And yet it was on my Droid X2, yes I still have my X2. Yeah, I've had it a while now. Not sure what I want for an upgrade though.

Anyway, if you're thinking about getting one of these devices be forewarned not that many apps support it. Not only that most of the newer TV's have all the app support they need. There are other devices that would fit the bill better than Chromecast. Like maybe the Apple TV device, Roku or Slingbox, etc....... I'm sure I could spend all night point out other devices with similar capability.

Ciao!
Some of the features I kind of liked. For instance I could set up a schedule for the phone to turn itself off and on again. I typically never got called in the middle of the night so it really didn't matter if the phone was off. If someone really wanted me they had my home phone number.

The built-in speakerphone isn't all that loud in a noisy car when it cradle on the dash. I was disappointed that the volume doesn't get all that loud. Some of the Android apps don't appear to work with a Bluetooth speakerphone. I don't have a Bluetooth earpiece but I doubt it would matter.

The stock battery while is ok if you the type that turns it off during working hrs like me. It has a good standby time on it but if you start using apps that drain the battery you better carry another with you. I bought the extended battery when I bought the phone. This battery does ok but it too can drain if you're surfing the web quite a bit. I naturally set the device to not download updates unless connected to WiFi.

I was kind of disappointed that it didn't come with a car charger. This is a must have accessory especially if you're using Google Latitude and Navigation. Both of which are great apps but can be an extreme drain on the battery. Unfortunately if you're trying to use the car charger you can't use the type of cradle I have. I had to turn it up side down because of where the USB port is located on the bottom left hand side. Of set it in the cup holder. Very disappointing.

Google Latitude is a very nice app.. It has some nice feature for locating resturants, coffee shops, etc.... It's been fairly accurate. What's nice is when you find the place you want to go you can tap on the blue arrow and it will automatically launch Google Navigation. Unfortunately, you can't hear the audio through the Bluetooth speakerphone.

That's it for now.Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-67417137333791481562011-11-05T07:26:00.001-04:002011-11-05T07:26:07.260-04:00Smartphone keyboard app.

If you read my blog you know that I finally purchased a Droid X2 in July. Well, I've had my mobile computing device (MCD aka SmartPhone) that thinks it's a phone since the middle of July. I bought the Motorola (Moto) Droid X2 (version 2) while I could still get unlimited download bandwidth from Verizon. I also get a 20% discount throughs the perks afforded to me by my company. That means in stead of spending $29.99/month internet access on my phone I only pay $23.99 for the unlimited usage.
I really wanted to wait until the 3rd or 4th generation phones were out before I bought a MCD.

In Oct there was a Android update. It seems to have fix a thing or two. Lately though I'm beggining to wonder. I've been having issue connecting to my Bluetooth speakerphones I use in the car and to wireless networks. They don't automatically connect like they used to and I have to go into settings to manually connect. OK, Verizon you can fix it any day now.
Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-92086066765533309542011-09-18T19:26:00.001-04:002011-09-18T19:26:00.721-04:00

Free calls home from Gmail for all U.S. service members
The con is that I'm like the car mechanic always working on other folks computers outside of work and mine at home are in really bad shape. I have about 10 computer systems with various operating systems (O/S) from Windows, different flavors of Unix/Linux and even a SUN Microsystems Blade100 workstation. My main workstation for a number of years was running RedHat Linux until the hard drive crashed hard on me in Fall '05. I received a HP laptop for Christmas so I wasn't in much of a hurry to rebuild and haven't really done much with my network lately.

I have tried to perfect my knowledge of managing my Windows systems but it's all about time. I've found some nice freeware utilities that I will list later. I have also found a utility that is built-in to the Windows O/S. Let's discuss this a little.

Go to the "Start" button and select 'Run'. Now type msconfig and hit 'Enter' and popup window will appear. WARNING: This is not for the squeemish or those of you that don't know what your doing as you could severely cripple your PC!!! You'll see several tabs now, the ones you want to look at are 'Startup' and 'Services'.

Freeware/Shareware Utilities:

Now I have found a couple of tools that are relatively easy to use. It will speed up your PC noticeably.

The other tool is one I like but it can be somewhat of the a resource hog. It is Secunia PSI. I just received my Google Voice Tel.# and this has some really cool options. For one all calls made from this number in the US are FREE and I can call Germany at $0.02/minute which is a whole lot cheaper than what Verizon is charging me.
I can manage this number from a google.com website and initiate calls from this site. I type in the number I want to call and it calls both that number as well as dialing my number I specify to connect both parties up.Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-32711033526973818102009-09-10T01:14:00.002-04:002009-09-13T17:08:46.108-04:00iTunes 9

APPLE just pushed this new version out tonight. It seems to be a vast improvement over version 8. Doesn't seem to use up the CPU as badly on this old XP box I'm using. I will admit that I turned off the simultaneous downloads in the old version too. I can play the radio and download one podcast at a time without the GUI hanging up on me.

It looks like they've added a Home Sharing feature that might be a greatly needed feature. Since it's late I won't force myself to play with it to figure it out. Nor do I want to write about it either at this late hour. I need to go into work somewhat coherent.

To use the home sharing go to the menu-bar, Help. After the iTunes Help window pops up select the Index tab then type sharing. I actually somewhat impressed with the Help in iTunes as it is clear and concise. You have to have an iTunes Store account to use some of the sharing features with multiple PCs' on your home network. For instance if I just want to listen to he music on another PC it's not a problem as you just search for shared music on your network. If you wanted to import music though you would have to log-in into your iTunes store account on every PC. Note that you can also password protect the share.

Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-15054834872129619172009-07-15T18:52:00.004-04:002009-07-15T21:30:01.947-04:00Rolling Thunder 2009
Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-75340856675765702322009-07-10T15:20:00.001-04:002009-07-10T15:20:34.685-04:00Happy Friday!

Testing the SUN blog publisher in OpenOffice 3.1 from a Linux system.

Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-91043308415517805482009-07-08T22:30:00.001-04:002009-07-08T22:52:40.104-04:00OpenOffice 3.1 upgrade

I had OpenOffice 3.0 Beta on my Windows XP PC and I upgraded to OpenOffice 3.1 tonight. Happy New Year!

No more Comchrash.net (Comcast) for me. I had Verizon install FIOS New Years Eve day, finally went to digital TV as well. Now I'm testing out the extension that allows you to upload to your blogspot.com account. I brought a PC home from work and installed Win2003 on it and then started installing all of the required software needed to run WSS. Interesting, it's one of Microsoft better products and it's free. I haven't touched Apache Tomcat in quite some time but I believe it could compare to WSS in some respects.

WSS has a lot of templates that are free downloads. Many very good templates that you would use in the Enterprise. Check out this page...click here

I would say that I've spent at least a day and a half building the server up. This includes setting up AD, SEP11, etc..... on it. I did a little more than just setup WSS.

I was trying to add custom templates but some of them didn't take yet. I need to figure out why. I suspect I wasn't holding me my mouth quite right. Who knows it could have been the fact that I've had a sinus infection the whole time I was installing stuff.Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5803464375715937184.post-20321252240282016742008-09-25T17:53:00.002-04:002008-09-25T17:57:02.554-04:00blog setupI'm not sure why but I finally decided to setup a blog. Even though I work with computers for a living I've been slow to really start looking at some of the new stuff out there.

I finally received an iPod 80Gb Classic this last Christmas. Nice! I like it very much and in some ways I'm glad I held out so long. It's worth the investment as I have more free podcasts on it than I do music.Brian Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03856128085433082876noreply@blogger.com0
